Green Home Tour Recap Venice, California
The sun shone brightly overhead on Saturday afternoon as guests of Eco | Consulting US and Hiving came from all across town to tour Joseph Treves’ new two-story contemporary LEED Platinum farmhouse in Venice, learn about what it took to build a LEED home, and help raise money to benefit Sustainable Works.
Throughout the day owner/builder Treves led tours through the home, speaking warmly of his initial dream to build a green home. In detail Treves described each “green” feature implemented during the construction process including Solar PV and Solar Thermal systems, radiant-heat flooring, energy and water-efficient appliances, low-voltage lighting, use of natural daylight, high-rated all natural insulation, use of non-toxic, sustainable, locally-manufactured finishes & materials, and drought-tolerant landscaping.

From its soft earth-tone plaster walls, trellised awnings, and richly woven wood gates, the home fit right in amongst its characteristically Los Angeles Spanish-style tiled-roof and stucco neighbors. For all its charming character and relaxed appeal, you hardly knew in passing what dedication and thought was put into making this the exceptional home it truly was, and we felt fortunate to get a closer look inside and around the property before it was sold and off limits to the public.
Local green business partner Epoxy Green showed up with fabulous gifts in re-usable eco-shopping bags, and guests enjoyed delicious organic vegan treats and wine, compliments of chef/owner Eric of SEED, while experts from Eco | Consulting US were available to answer questions and discuss the many innovative features of the home.
The highlight of the day, however, was seeing the excitement and hearing the passion with which Treves and his team through their “labor of love” made the commitment to take their project all the way through LEED Platinum Certification in order to make a difference in the residential building community. They hoped that by implementing very high-tech strategies and educating others in their industry they would spread the word that energy and water conservation – especially at the individual level – is the key to the future.
